This Syrian-style mosaic offers a geometric composition of "developed octagons" – at the centre, an octagon, which doubtless had a figured motif, is surrounded by eight squares, which are linked by eight lozenge shapes to an outer series of eight octagons. The octagons are filled with an overabundance of patterns in remarkable halftone colours; the treatment of the "rainbow"-style shading shows the mosaicist's chromatic mastery. Four triangular quoins feature compositions of ivy leaves emerging from a kantharos or a pelta (a crescent-shaped shield), against a red background.
