Mosaic E’ - Acanthus Seed Mosaic

Chargement du panoramique...

The central panel of this apse-shaped mosaic consists of tangent circles surrounded by a border of acanthus leaves, which are linked by a "diabolo" pattern.
A garland of acanthus seeds in the shape of cornucopias and unrolling from a centrally-located kantharoi provide the decorative elements of a band placed at the entrance to the room.
The style here is clearly Aquitaine in nature – the patterns and their treatments can be compared with mosaics from Séviac, Valence-sur-Baïsse, Neyrac, Saint-Sever and Pont d'Oly. The apse was heated by a hypocaust system.
