Mosaic O – Vine Branch Mosaic

Chargement du panoramique...

The décor of this mosaic is surprising in the choice of black and white, as well as by the use of vine leaves and garlands emerging from what were probably kantharoi (today lost). In contrast with the other mosaics, the mood here is exuberant, and no single compositional line dominates. The way the theme is handled is reminiscent of examples of Africa, Tripolitania and Turkey. Nevertheless, a similar composition can be found in a Late Antique mosaic discovered in Bordeaux.
