Mosaic A’ – Autumn and Winter

Chargement du panoramique...

The theme of the four seasons is represented by figures in the rectangular and square panels in the corners of the room. The figures are turned to face the visitor entering from the peristyle, with two busts nearest the door, and two full-length depictions at the opposite end.

Here, autumn takes the form of a female figure whose features and complexion are particularly carefully represented. She is wearing a crown of leaves and the billowing folds of her large cloak form a sort of halo. She is holding a duck and a rabbit by the feet. Next to her is a woven basket filled with large yellow fruit (lemons?). The extensive use of pâte de verre and small cubes reveals the extraordinary work of the mosaicist. This mosaic has been likened to works in both Aquitaine and the Near East, and African influences are also claimed.
